I found myself needing Jan’s services as a print and graphic design concierge. My girlfriend’s birthday was fast approaching, and I did not have much of an idea as to what to get her. After many years of subpar presents, this gift had to be a good one. While listening to Jan speak and looking at some of her work, I figured she could help. My girlfriend writes poetry and does some small drawings as a hobby. It came to me that turning these poems into a tangible book of some sort while including some of her drawings as illustrations would be the perfect comeback. In all honesty I was slightly nervous about bothering Jan with such a small one-off project. After seeing some of her work and learning about the companies that she has worked with, it seemed that her capabilities far exceeded what I was asking her to do. Again, in the spirit of honesty, I did not know what I wanted the final product to look like. I had a dozen or so drawings, 45+ poems, and almost no creative ability. Essentially, I handed it all over to Jan so she could work her magic, and in effect left my best gift idea in her hands.

As the project commenced, I was more than impressed with Jan’s professionalism. What I thought was a one-off small project was treated with the utmost responsiveness and attentiveness. Jan used her artistic background to help me construct an idea as to what the finished product could look like. Drafts and font options helped with brainstorming, though I always found myself choosing option A. I was very impressed with her ability to transfer pencil drawings and sketches into electronic format, and to typeset the poems to look like something you would read in a book right off the shelf. To state the obvious, I was more than excited to see what the final print version would look like. In no time, and well before my encroaching deadline, I was approving the final draft and Jan had let me know that the product was off to the printers and that she would have it for me in a few days. The final product has blown away all my expectations. The binding, texts, colors, and fonts had come together to make an amazing finished product. What was once a stack of lose leaf papers and few sketchbooks had become a tangible and realistic body of personal work. And more importantly, it was the best gift to date.
